The modernization of the Grand Boulevard tram line will begin with preparatory works on Friday night

2025-06-20 13:50:00

On 20 June, in the night from Friday to Saturday, the renovation works of tram lines 4 and 6 will begin between Nyugati tér and the Buda bridgehead of Margaret Bridge (Margit híd). A temporary stop and terminus will be built, information and traffic control signs will be removed, and diversion signs will be painted. After the reconstruction, the Grand Boulevard trams will also be able to travel faster and quieter on the Szent István Boulevard section.

In the course of the comprehensive track renovation works starting on 21 June, the deteriorated track will be renewed with modern noise and vibration-damped technology on a particularly busy section of the Grand Boulevard tram line, between Jászai Mari tér and Tátra utca. However, before the actual demolition works can commence, the onset of the renovation is linked to certain prerequisites.

Temporary terminus at the Vígszínház
Trams arriving from the South Buda terminuses will carry passengers to the temporary terminus at the Vígszínház during the renovation. Construction of a temporary platform will begin here at daybreak on Saturday, which passengers will be able to use from Sunday for boarding and alighting.
The return trams will be able to travel via a so-called creeping switch, which BKV specialists will install between Nyugati tér and the Vígszínház on the night before dawn on Saturday. The trams will be able to travel towards South Buda via this temporary switch built above the existing tracks.

BKV and the contractor will do their best to ensure that the renovation works cause as little disruption to passengers and to the peace and rest of residents in the area as possible. However, some of the technologies used during the reconstruction cannot be used during the heat wave, so night work is also expected – with consideration to the relevant regulations. Accordingly, BKV appreciates the patience of residents and passengers in advance.

Trams 4 and 6 will operate in a different way during the reconstruction

On Saturday, between 0:00 and 12:00, trams will operate between the South Buda terminuses and Oktogon M. From 12:00 on Saturday until 4:00 on Sunday, 22 June, vehicles will run between the South Buda terminuses and Nyugati pályaudvar.

From 4:00 on Sunday, 22 June, until the completion of the reconstruction, trams 4 and 6 will operate between the South Buda terminuses and the temporary terminus at Jászai Mari tér (Vígszínház).

Replacement by buses

From Saturday, for more than a month, instead of trams 4 and 6, passengers can travel between Széll Kálmán tér and Nyugati pályaudvar by replacement buses 4-6. The replacement buses will operate on the missing sections day and night. During daytime hours on weekdays, 28 articulated buses and 62 drivers will ensure continuous replacement.

Due to the renovation, significant road restrictions on Szent István Boulevard can also be anticipated: on the section between Pannónia utca and Jászai Mari tér, participants of the road traffic can only use one side of the tram track; one lane in each direction. Therefore, BKK and BKV request those travelling by car and bicycle to choose an alternative route if conditions permit.

Tram lines 4 and 6 are one of the busiest and most congested public transport routes in Budapest, with almost 280000 people travelling on them every day. The section between Tátra utca and the Pest bridgehead of Margaret Bridge (Margit híd) was last renovated by BKV 15 years ago, but the condition of the track has deteriorated significantly in recent years due to the even in global terms high traffic load, which justifies the current modernization. After the renovation works are completed, from August onwards, a more modern, faster and quieter tram service will welcome passengers on the Grand Boulevard.
