The Angyalföld tram depot is also preparing to receive CAF trams
On November 22, BKV will begin preparing the Angyalföld tram depot to receive and store modern CAF trams. As a first step the loop tracks located in the southern part of the depot and a related single siding will be replaced. The work is scheduled to continue until December 14.
CAF trams are arriving in Budapest on a continuous basis. The long-term storage and efficient operation of the total fleet of 51 vehicles, it is require the conversion of BKV tram depots. At its meeting on October 29, the Budapest General Assembly decided to launch a public procurement procedure for the project. Until its implementation BKV will carry out the preparatory works using its own resources.
The Angyalföld tram depot is currently not fully suitable for the movement and maintenance of CAF trams. The aim of the work starting on Saturday is to create the conditions for the trams: the rear loop tracks necessary for moving the trams will be replaced along with the special turnout of matching curvature that connects on the side of the southern gate. The tracks, ballast, and sleepers in poor condition will also be renewed.
A special feature of the modernization is that the replaced track curve is one of the tightest radius curves (18 meters) in the Budapest’s track network, which requires the rails to be bent before installation. According to the plans, this will be done on site by the contractor. This is a rare operation that requires great precision. The turnout was also designed specifically for this location and has a unique curvature.
In recent years, BKV has carried out similar renovations at several points in Budapest's tram infrastructure to accommodate the modern, low-floor CAF trams. The power converters on tram line 50 have been renewed, and the traction ground cable and overhead line network have also been partially renovated. Track renovations have been carried out on the Hűvösvölgy line, several stops have been made barrier-free, the overhead and underground power cable network has been reinforced, and overhead line support poles have been replaced.
The development at Angyalföld is part of this series of improvements and is another step towards a more modern tram system. BKV is doing everything within the limits of its available resources to ensure that comfortable, low-floor, air-conditioned CAF trams can transport passengers to as many locations across the capital as possible.
