On Saturday, 24 May, BKV’s open day series will continue at the Óbuda bus garage. A plethora of family and professional programmes await the old and the young at the event related to Children's Day. This year's highlight is a special vehicle exhibition, which presents the buses of the past 55 years and the machinery and civilian vehicles that can now be considered museum-quality. At the end of the day, between 4:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. - with prior registration - there will also be an opportunity to take photos of the vehicles.

On 24 May, the Óbuda Bus Garage of BKV will open its doors at 10:00 a.m. so that those interested can get a glimpse into the operation of a huge and complex system and see where and how the maintenance, repair and preparation of the vehicles that operate in Budapest every day take place. In excess of the technical and professional presentations, experts will also show how to change tires on huge buses, and an interactive installation will draw attention to safe driving and the importance of blind spot monitoring. Visitors who are 18 years of age or older, have a category ’B’ license for at least two years, and are physically able to drive can also test drive a bus if they present their license on site. For this programme, a prior registration is required; however, an on-site registration will also be available for a limited number of places.

In addition to the professional programmes, BKV welcomes visitors with a special vehicle exhibition alike. Buses from the past 55 years, machinery and civilian vehicles that can now be considered museum pieces are lined up. Among other exhibits, a flatbed and fire truck Csepel, a snowplough ZIL, an old snowplough Unimog, as well as the most modern iron-wheeled Unimog and some police and airport vehicles will be on display. The occasional collection, which provides a comprehensive look back at the vehicles of the time, was compiled by courtesy of the employees and friends of BKV and Budapest Public Works. Beyond the cars and trolleybuses operated in Óbuda and other garages, the iconic Ikarus buses will also be presented in large numbers on the open day: IK180, IK556, IK415, IK405, IK55, airport IK280, IK280, IK60 trolleybus, IK60 trolleybus with trailer and the legendary IK630 convertible. Ikarus fans can have the recently published book with the title ’Ikaruses in Budapest – The 200s in the capital city’ (in Hungarian: Ikarusok Budapesten – A 200-asok a fővárosban) autographed by the authors on site between 11:00 and 12:00 a.m.

The little ones will be entertained by BKV’s uniquely designed play bus with double articulation – made from a Van Hool AGG 300 bus –, a children’s activity centre, face painting and water games from the Budapest Water Works. The adventure journey cannot be missed either: children can try out the Ikarus 60 minibus, ride a pump-handle vehicle and admire the forest diesel locomotive.

The venue – Óbuda Bus Garage, 1037 Budapest, Pomázi út 15. – is accessible from the Bécsi út / Vörösvári út terminus by the K1 Ikarus 280 heritage bus, which will depart opposite the 118 bus stop. From the bus garage, visitors can take a round trip back to Vörösvári út. The open day will last until 4:00 p.m., but afterwards, BKV will provide a half-hour opportunity for photographing vehicles for those who register for the programme in advance. The registration interface for the vehicle photographing and test driving will be published by the transport company on its official Facebook page.
