BKV's new buses arrive from now on

2025-09-15 14:04:00

The first Mercedes-Benz Citaro K type buses, manufactured to the order by BKV, left for Hungary today. Additional buses from the 65-unit rolling stock will arrive continuously. Rejuvenating the bus fleet is a key goal of BKV, and with the arrival of the new buses, almost 8 percent of the bus pool will be renewed.

The 65 (+20 options) Maximidi-sized buses arrive at BKV with a long-term lease contract. The new vehicles are equipped to meet the expectations of the time, with an ergonomic passenger compartment, on-board cameras, a modern passenger information system - including a large monitor - and LED, energy-saving passenger compartment lighting. USB connection options have been developed at the seats, so anyone can charge their phone or smart device. The Maximidi buses are low-floor and air-conditioned, with a larger passenger capacity compared to midi-sized buses, and thanks to their barrier-free design, they can also be used comfortably by passengers with strollers and those with reduced mobility. The first vehicle has been completed and is already on its way to Hungary. Additional items of the fleet will arrive continuously and will be put into service after naturalization.

BKV, together with the city administration, believes that technical defects and maintenance costs can only be reduced by purchasing new vehicles. Compared to the average age of 14-15 years in previous years, the average age of the entire fleet is currently more than 12 years, while the optimal maximum lifespan for buses is 8-10 years. BKV specialists work every day to ensure that the aging rolling stock provides reliable, safe service to passengers. The company checks the fleet every day; no bus that is put into traffic can leave the garages in a way that would endanger anyone. The vehicles also undergo weekly, quarterly and annual technical inspections. The company's specialists immediately take care of any repairs that are discovered and necessary – which are attributable to the age of the vehicles.

Until the aging vehicles are replaced, BKV is further developing the protocols for forced over-operation – with the involvement of universities. This is an existing system already used by the company, which is now being extended to buses. The essence of this is that in the case of assets (vehicles, infrastructure elements) that are forced to continue operating beyond their planned lifespan, the special tests and inspection methods that must be applied for safe operation should be determined with scientific support.
