1. Terms and Conditions of Travelling
Customers
who want to use any of the services of BKV Zrt. have to hold - unless
otherwise provided by the pricing regulation -an appropriate ticket for
the given line which can be validated or have to possess an appropriate
pass, travelling certificate or a document certifying their right to
travel free of charge.
Passengers using the services of BKV Zrt. (during boarding and alighting, waiting for the vehicle and travelling) are obliged to behave in a way that does not endanger the safety of traffic, vehicles, stations and equipments and the other passengers' convenience or peace.
1.1. Transportation of hand luggage
Every passenger is permitted to carry maximum 2 pieces of luggage free of charge, the sizes of which must not exceed 40x50x80 cm or 20x20x200 cm which can be carried by one person and which must not obstruct entry to or exit from the vehicle, It is permitted to carry one sledge, one pair of skis, one wrapped sapling tree or a pram.
1.2. Transportation of Animals
A dog (regardless of its size) may be transported on the vehicles on the condition of the purchase of a full-price ticket or pass for the dog for the given distance. A single ticket or one of the discount coupon tickets is also valid on the entire length of HÉV (suburban railway) lines.
You may purchase a full-price monthly pass for your dog. The pass coupon must be used together with a general pass certificate and "EB" (this is the Hungarian word for 'dog') must be written in the place reserved for the photo, according to the rules applicable to general passes. Police dogs, help dogs for the disabled and guide dogs for the blind may travel free of charge. Only one dog may be transported in each vehicle (car) and must be on a lead, wear a muzzle and be in a clean condition.
Other pets (cats, ferrets, etc.) may be transported free of charge in a container of a size which does not exceed that of permitted hand luggage and which ensures the animal cannot soil the vehicle or the clothing of other passengers.
1.3 Other terms and conditions
In order to ensure travel safety it is forbidden to board a vehicle or alight from it after the starting warning has sounded, and you must not obstruct the doors while they are closing.
It is forbidden to listen to radios or other sound equipment within the vehicles or within the areas of metro and HÉV stations at a volume that may disturb other passengers.
On the vehicles and within the area of metro, HÉV and cogwheel railway stations it is forbidden:
In order to protect public health, persons with infectious diseases are not permitted to travel in the vehicles.
Children under the age of 6 years and persons with a mobility disability may travel only with an escort.
Backpacks should be carried in the hand to avoid injuring other passengers.
Passengers are required to refrain from soiling vehicles and other areas of the transport facilities.
Passengers who break any of these prohibitions can be excluded from travel.
2. Supplementary Terms and Conditions
2.1. Supplementary Terms and Conditions of Travel on HÉV (suburban railway) lines
In addition to the information contained in the general Terms and Conditions of Travel: It is permitted to transport an object of a size not exceeding 100x100x200 cm. on to the platform where it is indicated by a pictogram, and if the correct fare is paid for it. The fare is the price of a full-price ticket. Luggage exceeding the aforementioned size cannot be transported under any circumstances.
Bicycles
may be transported only in carriages where it is indicated on the
platform, on the entire length of the line, and by the validation of a
single ticket. A maximum of 4 bicycles may be transported in a
carriage.
2.2. Supplementary Terms and Conditions of Travel on the Metro
Passengers use escalators at their own risk. Hold on to the moving rubber handrail band continuously after stepping onto the escalator, minding your hands.
Travel on the right-hand side of the escalator and leave the left-hand side free for passengers in a hurry to pass you. Small children should be carried in hands.
Dogs must be carried in hands. Large dogs must use the stationary, back-up escalator (if it is possible), after the traffic control staff who are on duty have been informed.
Bicycles must not be transported on the metro.

On the area of the Millennium Underground (MILLFAV) wheel-chair lifts help the physically handicapped passengers. There are wheel-chair lifts on the following stations: Deák Ferenc tér, Széchenyi fürdő and Mexikói út.
Our passenger can use the wheel-chair lifts and receive a key with serial number to them after passing theoretical and practical exams.

You can pass the theoretical exam on the premises of Lifttechnika Kft. according to preliminary appointment. The practical exam has to be taken either at Széchenyi fürdő or Mexikói út station.
2.3. Supplementary Terms and Conditions of Travel on the Chair-lift
The
chair-lift can be used only in possession of a valid ticket
pre-purchased at the ticket office of the Chair-lift. Other tickets
and passes, travel certificates of BKV Zrt. and other documents
certifying the right to travel free cannot be used for travel on the
Chair-lift.
Tickets are available for single or return
trips which are valid on the indicated day. Small children under 2
years can be transported free of charge sitting on an adult's lap.
Children up to 10 years can travel only accompanied by adults and with
a children's ticket.
As the seats of the Chair-lift move while passengers sit in or get out of them, you can use the Chair-lift for your own responsibility. Passengers who intend to use it for the first time are recommended to try the usage of the seats which are in the waiting room. The safety bar of the seats has to be folded down by the passenger and it has to be kept closed during the journey.
Passengers have to get out of the Chair-lift at the station without regard that they are taking a single or a return trip. Those who take a return trip have to queue up again at the starting place.
Transportation of hand luggage, skis, sledge: each passenger is allowed to transport one hand luggage not exceeding the size of 40x50x60 cm and maximum 5 kg weight or a pair of skis, ski sticks or one sledge free of charge. Luggage heavier, bigger in size, or more than one piece per person or other luggage (e.g. bicycle) cannot be transported even by paying extra charge.
Transportation of pets is allowed on condition of paying extra fee (price of a children's ticket). On the seats of the Chair-lift living animals can be transported only in an appropriate packaging and only if they satisfy the conditions of transporting hand luggage. Seats soiled by the animal have to be cleaned by the owner of the pet or in certain cases a cleaning charge has to be paid (cleaning charge is the price of an adult return ticket).

2.4. Supplementary Terms and Conditions of Travel on the Buda Funicular
The
Funicular can be used only in possession of a ticket bought at the
ticket office of the Funicular. The ticket is valid for one trip uphill
or downhill. The ticket is valid for one year after purchase. Other
tickets or passes, travel certificates of BKV Zrt and other documents
certifying the right to travel free cannot be used for travel on the
Funicular with the exception of the ones given below:
The ticket has to be validated by validating machine when crossing
the platform gate. After validation the ticket cannot be transferred
and has to be kept during the trip till exiting the station and it has
to be handed over for controllers' request.
Children
can travel free of charge up to 3 years, between 3 and 14 years of age
with a children's ticket and from 14 years of age with an adult ticket.
Children under 6 years can travel on the Funicular only with an adult.
An adult can take only one or two children under the age of 2.
People with physical disability in possession of the certificate issued by the Transport Committee of MEOSZ can travel on the Funicular free of charge.
Transportation of pets is not allowed.
Children under the age of 6 cannot travel without an attendant.
You are not allowed to stay on the platform except for the time of boarding or alighting.
Passengers violating any of these regulations can be excluded from travel.
2.5. Supplementary Terms and Conditions of Travel on scheduled boat and ferry lines
You can use the boat service only with boat tickets purchased on the spot, other tickets and passes of BKV Zrt are not valid.
On the boats and ferries it is forbidden to sell things or to place advertisements without permission.

3. Use of the tickets and passes
Tickets, passes and other travel certificates must be handed over on controller's request.
A single ticket is valid for one uninterrupted trip without change on buses, trams, underground, trolleybuses, cogwheel-railway on the whole length of the lines and within the administrative boundaries of Budapest on suburban railway (HÉV). You can use it for 60 minutes after stamping. You can change lines within the metro network (metro lines 1,2 or 3). On the night service vehicles (with route numbers 900) it is valid for 90 minutes.
It has to be validated before starting your trip on metro lines at the
entrance gates when entering the metro stations and on other vehicles
it has to be validated immediately after boarding by the validating
machines. You cannot transfer your validated tickets to other people,
and have to keep them till the end of your journey.
Validity of the single ticket bought on the spot is equal to that of the single ticket with the following differences:
The 10 piece discount coupon book contains 10 single tickets. The block can be disconnected and the tickets can be used separately, although they can be bought only in a block. Aticket is valid for one uninterrupted trip without change on buses, trams, underground, trolleybuses, cogwheel-railway on the whole length of the lines and within the administrative boundaries of Budapest on suburban railway (HÉV). You can use it for 60 minutes after stamping.
You
can change lines within the metro network (metro lines 1,2 or 3). On
the night service vehicles (with route numbers 900) it is valid for 90
minutes. It has to be validated before starting your trip on metro
lines at the entrance gates when entering the metro stations and on
other vehicles it has to be validated immediately after boarding by the
validating machines. You cannot transfer your validated tickets to
other people, and have to keep them till the end of your journey.
The transfer ticket is valid for one trip
with one change in one direction on buses, trams, metro, Millennium
Underground, trolleybuses, cog-wheel railway on the whole length of the
lines and within the administrative boundaries of Budapest on suburban
railway (HÉV). When validated first with a stamping machine it is valid
for 90 minutes, within this time for 60 minutes after the second
validation.
You have to validate the ticket twice, first when you board the first vehicle at one end and when you change at its other end (but you do not have to validate it when you change metro lines). On the metro stations and on certain HÉV suburban railway stations you have to validate it before starting your trip, when you enter the stations at the entrance gates and on other vehicles immediately after boarding by the on-board validating machines. You must not transfer your validated ticket to other people and you have to keep it till the end of your trip.
Conurbation single tickets are valid
on bus lines crossing the administrative boundaries of Budapest on
route sections outside the capital or on buses running only in the
conurbation towns for one uninterrupted trip without change. If you
validate it by a stamping machine you can use it for 60 minutes. You
have to validate your ticket by a validating machine right after
boarding.
If you possess a Budapest pass and travel from Budapest
in the direction of a conurbation town you do not have to validate your
conurbation ticket immediately after boarding but before crossing the
administrative border. You must not transfer your validated ticket to
other people and you have to keep it till the end of your trip.
Conurbation single tickets can be purchased for the following
distances:
The
different route sections of the conurbation single tickets are defined
by Annex 1 of Budapest Municipality Regulation. People entitled to
price reduction can buy conurbation single tickets with 50 or 90 per
cent price discount on the basis of Government Decree on Price
Allowances in Public Passenger Transport.
If you have to change to replacement buses with the above listed tickets (e.g. in case of cancelled departure, technical failure, etc.) you can continue your trip with the already validated ticket but you have to validate its other end by the validating machine of the replacement bus. In such a case you do not have to validate your transfer ticket on the replacement vehicle.
1-day travel card is valid for 24 hours from the indicated date and time (month, day, hour, minute) for an unlimited number of trips on buses, trams, trolleybuses, on metro, Millennium Underground, cogwheel-railway on the whole length of the line but on suburban railway (HÉV) only within the administrative boundaries of Budapest. You can finish your last trip which was started within the time of validity.
3-day travel cards are valid for 72 hours from the indicated date and time (month, day, hour, minute) for an unlimited number of trips on buses, trams, trolleybuses, on metro, Millennium Underground, cogwheel-railway on the whole length of the line but on suburban railway (HÉV) only within the administrative boundaries of Budapest. You can finish your last trip which was started within the time of validity.
7-day travel cards are valid on the indicated 7 days between 00.00-24.00 for an unlimited number of trips on buses, trams, trolleybuses, on metro, Millennium Underground, cogwheel-railway on the whole length of the line but on suburban railway (HÉV) only within the administrative boundaries of Budapest. It is issued to the name of the holder and is not transferable. The name of the holder has to be written on it in ink in capital letters before starting the first trip.
Budapest Cards are theproducts of the Budapest Tourist Office and can be used by an adult and a child up to 14 years travelling together on the routes of BKV Zrt. It is valid for numberless trips on buses, trams, metro, Millennium Underground, trolleybuses, cog-wheel railway on the whole length of the lines and on HÉV suburban railways within the administrative boundaries of Budapest. The card is valid for 24, 48 or 72 hours (depending on the chosen version) following the time and date stamped on it. It is for personal use and it has to be signed.
Passes consist ofa pass certificate and a pass coupon which is issued for a certain period of time and they entitle you to travel only together. For full price passes you need a general pass certificate or a VOLÁNBUSZ BKSZ pass certificate issued by VOLANBUSZ Zrt., for passes of pensioners and disabled people you need a pensioner's pass certificate, for passes for parents with small children you need a pass certificate for parents with small children which you can obtain at certain ticket offices for the handling fee defined by the Regulation of Budapest General Assembly.
Pupils and students have to keep their pass coupons together with their student cards. Validity of the student cards is defined by the current Government Decree.
Before starting the first trip in each month the number of the valid
pass certificate or student card has to be written in the empty box of
the coupon eligibly in ink.
Every all line Budapest pass is valid on
trolleybuses, trams, metros, on the Millennium Underground and the
cogwheel railway on the whole length of the line, on buses to the first
stop outside the administrative boundary of Budapest, on HÉV suburban
trains, on certain MÁV trains and on certain conurbation buses of
VOLÁNBUSZ to the last stopwithin the administrative boundaries of Budapest.
Budapest passes can be bought by any starting day (with the exception of the discount price annual pass) with the following versions:
14 day pass is valid from 0000 on the marked day (1st day) to 2400 on the 14th day.
Monthly pass is valid for one month, from 0000 of the chosen day of the given month to 2400 of the previous day of the next month (e.g. pass with a starting day of 10th of a month is valid to the 9th day of the following month). Starting with the 1st day of the month it is valid till the last day of the month.
Quarterly passes are valid for 100 days.
Annual passes with monthly price can be bought all year round. They are valid from the first day of the year to 02.00 a.m. on 6th of January of the following year. You can buy it only for full months and if returned, we pay back the prices of full months only which have not started yet. (e.g. If you buy it on 20 March, you pay 10 full months price. If you want to return it on 5 September, you can get 3 months price back.) We can refund your pass only for the handling fee defined by the Regulation of Budapest General Assembly.
Discount price annual passes are valid for an entire year from the 1st day of the year to 02.00 a.m. on 6th of January of the next year. Discount price annual passes cannot be returned.
The following types of Budapest passes are available: full price pass, student's pass and pensioner's pass. 14-day passes can be bought only in full price version. Student's and pensioner's passes can be used only by people who are entitled to them on the basis of Government Decree on Price Allowances in Public Passenger Transport. Reduced price passes which do not belong under the force of this Government Decree but under the force of the Regulation of Budapest General Assembly are the following (their validity corresponds to Budapest monthly pass):
Monthly passes for parents with small children can be used by persons with Budapest home address certified by an official document who are eligible for Child-care allowance (GYES) or Child-rearing allowance (GYET).
Right to pass for parents with small children can be certified by an original example of certification received from the paying office or the official decision which is not older than 6 months. Upon this document a "parent with small child" pass certificate will be issued for eligible people. It is valid for one year or maximum for the period of receiving any of the above allowances. If expired, the pass certificate can be extended in case the passenger still has the right to it, but eligibility has to be proven again.
The extended pass certificate is valid only till the holder receives the allowance. The pass certificate for parents with small children can be used rightfully after its expiry until the expiry of the last monthly pass coupon bought within its period of validity.
Monthly pass for people with physical disabilities can be used by physically disabled people whose mobility classification by official medical expert's opinion is at least "7" and whose physical state is considered to be permanent by the expert's opinion (on the basis of Annex 1, 2 and 3 of Government Decree 164/1995 (XII.7.) on the right to price reduction for persons with severe physical disability).
For travel by bus to destination outside the administrative boundaries of Budapest, holders of Budapest passes have to validate a single ticket or a single ticket bought on the spot or a ticket of the discount coupon book, or a transfer ticket or a conurbation single ticket or they have to possess a conurbation pass.
Conurbation bus passes can be purchased for 3 distances:
- 5 km conurbation passes are valid for the bus lines of BKV Zrt. for travels between the settlement indicated on the pass coupon and the first bus stop within Budapest. 5 km conurbation pass cannot be purchased for Törökbálint.
- 10 km conurbation passes are valid for the bus lines of BKV Zrt. running to Törökbálint and Budaörs, between these towns and the first bus stop inside Budapest.
- Conurbation local bus passes are valid within the settlement indicated on the pass coupon.
Conurbation bus passes for 5 km and 10 km can be purchased in full
price or reduced price versions, conurbation local passes are available
in full price or student's or pensioner's pass versions. Student's or
pensioner's conurbation passes and reduced price conurbation passes can
be used by persons who are entitled to them on the basis of Government
Decree on Price Allowances in Public Passenger Transport.
The
borders of the sections relating to the conurbation passes can be found
in the Regulation of Budapest General Assembly.
On HÉV suburban railways a distance based fare system is applied. Single tickets, transfer tickets, single tickets bought on the spot and Budapest all line passes are valid for travelling within the administrative boundaries of Budapest. HÉV tickets and passes can be bought at HÉV ticket offices, and can be bought in advance as well. In case of pre-purchase the passenger defines the starting day. The vehicles can be boarded only in possession of valid pass or ticket or travel certificate - with some exceptions to be detailed below.
To destinations outside the administrative boundaries of Budapest HÉV tickets have to be bought according to the distance in case the passenger does possess a valid ticket for the Budapest section: a single ticket, transfer ticket, a ticket of a discount coupon book or a single ticket bought on the spot or a pass. Ticket offices stamp the date of the trip on tickets issued for the Budapest section, and they are valid for one trip on the stamped date. You cannot buy a return ticket for the section of the lines within Budapest.
HÉV tickets are valid for one trip without interruption on the indicated day. In case of return tickets, they have to be used until 2400 on the 3rd day after the starting day and on the way back the ticket for the trip to the destination has to be shown up as well. HÉV tickets and passes for students and other people eligible for price reductions are valid together with the document certifying their right to it, which have to be handed over on controller's request.
HÉV tickets can be returned before their validity if their price exceeds the handling fee.
Only one ticket can be bought at a reduced price with one student card.
HÉV passes are valid between the indicated two stations or stops on HÉV line sections outside the administrative boundaries of Budapest. In case of students the discount price passes can be used only for travelling between the dwelling place and the educational institute or the place of practice.
If the place of practice is not in the educational institution, the reduced price pass for the different line or distance can be obtained upon a certificate issued by the school. If the location of the educational institution changes temporarily and the right for travelling with price reduction on a line does not turn out from the student card, the student can certify his right by a special certificate issued for the time of the change by the school. Passes and student cards have to be handed over on controller's request.
A
passenger possessing a valid ticket or pass or any other document
certifying his right to travel have to by a distance based ticket for
the section outside the administrative boundaries of Budapest at the
HÉV ticket office, and if there is no open ticket office at the place
of boarding he has to buy his ticket on the HÉV train from the
controller at the first ticket control, naming the station of boarding.
A passenger travelling to Budapest and not possessing a valid ticket or pass or any other document certifying his right to travel within Budapest has to buy HÉV ticket for the line sections inside Budapest. If there is no open ticket office at the place of boarding passengers have to buy their tickets (including the fare for the section inside Budapest) on the HÉV train from the controller at the first ticket control, naming the station of boarding.
There is no possibility to buy passes on HÉV trains.
On HÉV stations and stops where there is a painted line on the platform and there are validating machines you can enter the area behind the painted line only with a validated ticket. If there is no painted line on the place of boarding, you have to validate your ticket immediately after boarding with an on-board validating machine.
Bicycle pass stickers are valid for transportation of bicycles on vehicles of BKV Zrt. which are appropriate for it and therefore marked with a bicycle sign. In case the bicycle pass is valid on the given route but the pass of the passenger is not valid (e.g. outside the administrative boundaries of Budapest) he has to buy the appropriate ticket or pass only for himself. Bicycle pass is available in the form of a monthly pass sticker and it has to be stuck to the pass of the passenger. It can be bought to the discount price annual passes, quarterly and monthly passes and to HÉV passes. In case of a pass which is valid for several months only as many stickers will be stuck on the pass as the number of the remaining months. It can be returned only together with the pass of the passenger, and only if it satisfies the conditions of returning.
